CERAMIC BUTTON

Here is a modern Ceramic button which belongs to my friend Joyce. It is striped in various colours and is bright and cheery. It has a self shank and measures approx. 2 1/2 cm.

FABRIC BUTTON

Here is a braid covered button in a very intricate flower like design. It is a quite deep concave shape and is very effective. It measures 3 cm and has a plastic shank glued to the back.

LACE MAKING BOBBINS

I have two friends who do lace making and these are the types of bobbins that they use. These are actually mine; I love the turned wood and the glass beads and they are very tactile. The two light coloured ones are a gift from my friend Jackie. The bone one is another gift from my friend Di and it comes from Ireland. It was made in the 18th century.

MOTHER OF PEARL BUTTONS

Mother of Pearl buttons have been made for many years. They have been dyed and carved in many and varied intricate designs. This lot are utility buttons and would have been suitable for a plain as well as a patterned fabric.

PLASTIC BUTTONS

Here are some Pressed Plastic buttons from the 1930’s. I have them in their original tube and they were made by Astor Buttons. I love the simple designs that are pressed into them and they are a pretty green colour.

BAKELITE BUTTON

This is a nice Applejuice Bakelite button which I have just acquired. It just has a simple design and the colour is of course Applejuice yellow. It has a metal loop shank and measures a little over 2 1/2 cm.

CELLULOID BUTTON

Here is a Celluloid button in a dark brown colour. It is also new to my collection. It has a celluloid shank glued to the back.

BLACK GLASS BUTTONS

I have a Surveyor’s map drawer cabinet to hold many of my buttons. Here are two pictures of my black glass with silver lustre buttons. I think that they look good en masse.

AUSTRIAN TINIES BUTTONS

Here are three Austrian tinies buttons that have just been given to me. I appreciate the fine detail in the making of these buttons. They are fascinating. They are under 1 cm in diameter and have a japanned tin back which is typical in their construction.

BUTTON CARD

This button card was given to me recently and it is in very good order. It is by Beutron and I think is from the 1950’s. On the back is advertised to collect these cards to paste into a special free Beutron Nursery Booklet. It says to include a threepenny halfpenny stamp for postage.
