These colourful ceramic buttons were made by Jennifer Warburton from Phillip Island, Victoria in 2012. She trades under the name Embellish a Little. Each of these buttons has a design impressed into them and some have a touch of gold to enhance them. They have a certain handmade look about them which makes them unique.
BONE BUTTON
This bone button is modern and probably comes from Nepal or India. It is a realistic flower shape and has some carving on it which doesn’t show up too well in the photo. It is very shiny and smooth and measures 4 cm x 3 1/2 cm so is a nice size.
BONE BUTTONS
Here are two modern bone buttons, one being carved and the other dyed and a design drawn on it. Is it meant to be a face? The other heart shaped button is of horn and has three brass bands inlaid. I like the handmade look about these buttons and they were made in India. Maybe they are cattle bone and horn.
SATSUMA BUTTONS
Here are two Satsuma porcelain buttons depicting a Geisha Girl holding a flower. You can tell they are hand painted because if you look closely you can see slight variations in the image. They must use such a fine brush to get the fine detail. It would be interesting to watch one being made. I think these buttons are fairly old with the black border and lots of gold work.
MODERN BUTTON
This is a modern enamel button which is a favourite of mine. It is so colourful with it’s floral design. It is domed and hollow; I don’t know what the holes on each side are for, there must have been some purpose for them. It measures 2 1/2 cm. I think I got it at the local Hospice Opp Shop a few years ago. In reality the colours are really dazzling.
COCONUT SHELL BUTTONS
Here is a group of modern coconut shell buttons which have been quite plentiful in the button shops over the last few years. I rather like them for their variety of design, technique and colour and have a nice selection of them. They would brighten up many a garment.
METAL BUTTON
This is a fairly plain metal picture button which I have had for many years. It shows a duck about to take off or land among some grass. The border is wide and simply decorated. It has a japanned back and metal loop shank and measures just under 4 1/2 cm so is quite large.
METAL BUTTON
This metal picture button depicts a child playing with a hoop. I think it is in the Big Book of Buttons so it is always nice to find a button you have in a book. Metal picture buttons usually have quite good detail as does this one. It is not as big as some of my Picture buttons.
NOVELTY BUTTONS
Here are three novelty chook buttons, each one different. One is a laser cut wooden button, one a painted wooden button and the final one is ceramic. Years ago our little button group suggested we select a subject and find as many buttons as we could. I chose chooks and got about a dozen. I have them mounted on hessian which seems quite suitable.
BUTTON CARD
This is a reproduction button card which I bought in a little shop in the Nicholas Building in Melbourne quite a few years ago. It has three old plastic buttons displayed in colours matching the art work of the card so has a nice overall effect. The lady was selling vintage buttons and had them all on reproduction cards and I bought a few mainly because they were nicely presented.
