CHILDREN’S BUTTONS

These children’s buttons from the 1930’s – 40’s are realistics with simple shapes and very little detail.  It is their simplicity that makes them appealing and the colours are very subtle.

What child wouldn’t have loved these buttons on their clothing.

CELLULOID BUTTONS

There are some nice mixtures of colours in this group of small Celluloid buttons.

They are all just over 1  1/2cm in diameter and are also all sew through type.  They come from the 1930’s.

MOTHER OF PEARL BUTTON

This beautifully etched MOP button features a lovely little bird and some flowers.

The back view shows the unusual brass shank attachment.  I find this a very good quality and interesting button.  It measures 2  1/2cm.  A lady gave me her button jar to go through and I found it there so it was a nice surprise.

OPP SHOP FINDS

We have had weeks of extremely hot days for nearly 3 weeks and I was so sick of being indoors trying to keep cool.  Last Wednesday it was cooler so on the spur of the moment I decided to go for a drive.  I went to Kyabram and met a friend for a coffee and then to the local Salvos Opp Shop.  I was looking in a small box of buttons when one of the volunteers came over.  She said that she had a few tins of buttons out the back and that I could go through them.  I had told her that I was a collector.  Well I had great fun and got quite a few black and clear glass buttons as well as some old plastics and perspex so I was pretty pleased.  I am sure that many of them had not been used. They cost $5 the lot.  I reckon there was at least $30 worth.  Just to be cooler and to have a good find made my day. So here they are.

NEEDLE HOLDERS

Here are two very different old needle holders.

The brown one has a lady mending her stocking pictured on it and it holds a small spool of thread which has a small needle compartment inside.

The other one is in the shape of a girl and has some thread on the top and is hollow for holding needles.  What a nice way to store your needles.

FABRIC BUTTONS

Fabric is a very general term to cover stitched, crocheted  or beaded buttons etc.

These three cover wooden button moulds.  Two are very finely crocheted and one is stitched in an ecru thread onto fabric.  They do not have a shank as such but must be sewn through the thread work or fabric on the back of the button.

CARVED WOOD BUTTON

My friend Olwyn bought this button for me at The Button Queen Shop in London in 2013.

It is nicely carved and has fine accents of cream, orange and gold paint.  It is quite large at 4  1/2 x 3  1/2 cm.

MODERN ENAMEL BUTTON

This is a beautifully designed button with a floral  theme.

The colours are so vibrant.  It is 2   1/2cm in diameter and has a domed shape making it hollow and quite light.  It comes from Japan.

MOTHER OF PEARL BUTTON

This is yet another button of which I only have one of it’s type.

The delicately painted figures are on shell which has been set into a fine silver base.  It is a Persian button and has a hand made appearance making it very appealing.  It is just over 2 cm  x 1  1/2cm.

CELLULOID BACK BUTTONS

Two of these Celluloid Back Buttons are 3 cm while the one with the fancy border is just under 4 cm.

They are all very decorative in their design.  A lot of these type of buttons are in shades of brown, fawn and ochre.
