Buttonsplus

Well, you wouldn’t say they were beautiful but I guess on the right garment they would look ok. They certainly are different. Yes, they are made of snake’s skin. They have been coated with a very high gloss.

This beaded button was hand stitched by Helen Pappas in 2017. She does lots of embroidered buttons also and lives near Benalla, Victoria. I bought it at a Melbourne Buttonfest where she and her husband had a stall. It is nice and bright and measures 3 1/4 cm.

These terracotta buttons are perfectly round and quite fine and feature a peacock’s feather. The colours are distinct and really bright and true to life. They are sew through type buttons and measure a little over 2 cm. I do not know where they were made.

Here are two Vegetable Ivory buttons by Bob Benson, USA both being made in 2012. They both have been finely carved with a dye added. One has a large turquoise stone set in the middle while the other has a fossil embedded in the centre. They are harder to obtain now and are becoming very expensive. They measure a little over 4 cm so are quite large.

This is a modern white metal button. It is a realistic button of a daisy flower and has good detail. It is just of average size.

This Celluloid button is a dark dirty green/brown colour and has a central circle of buffed celluloid with a sort of swirly pattern. It has a japanned back and measures just under 4 1/2cm. It would be showy on an overcoat.

Here are two hand painted Satsuma porcelain buttons both featuring a Geisha Girl. They are different colours and poses. I find the buttons with people are not as readily available as those with flowers or birds. These measure 2 cm so are a reasonable size.

Here is a hand painted wooden Russian button featuring a real grizzly bear walking in the woods. It is nice strong bright colours and has a real sheen to it. As you can see it is signed on the back and has the number 94 which I am assuming may be 1994. It is quite a nice size at just under 4 cm.

This Metal Picture button depicts Moses in the Bullrushes. It is amazing how they get so much detail onto such a small space. So much effort was put into making buttons back in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Here is a metal picture button showing an Egyptian lady kneeling by some flowers. I do not know how old it is or what metal is used so in other words I do not know much about it at all !! I know there was an era when Egyptian style things were the fashion and I have a buckle from that time. The button measures 3 cm.
