CELLULOID BUTTONS

These three Celluloid buttons are new to my collection and were a present from my friend Sandra. They are all bubble tops and have a japanned back.

PLASTIC BUTTON

I think this button is probably Bakelite and has an embossed brass central disc featuring a horse rider. It has been painted black and rubbed back which shows up the details. It is a light brown colour but there have been several other colours made up in this design. It measures 3 1/2cm, I think it may be from the 1920’s – 30’s.

GLASS BUTTON

I like the look of this white glass button but I can see that the flowers have been painted yellow so it would have looked quite different in it’s original state. It represents the Japanese Chrysanthemum and is quite a lovely design. I have just found out that it is Uranium glass and glows green under the UV light. ( Thanks Meg ! ) It measures 3 1/2cm.

SNAKESKIN BUTTONS

Here are two snakeskin buttons. They have been lacquered to give them a high gloss. They have a tin back and metal loop shank and measure 2 1/4

CERAMIC BUTTON

This is a handmade Ceramic button from Newfoundland. My friend Olwyn bought it in Newfoundland in 2014 for me. It just has lines making up the pattern and measures 3 cm.

CELLULOID BUTTON

This rather large Celluloid button has an abstract pattern and is quite striking. It is a greeny/grey with cream, orange and black accents which really stand out. It belongs to my friend Carol.

BAKELITE BUCKLE AND BUTTON

Here is an Applejuice Bakelite Buckle and button. The buckle is large at 8 cm X 7 cm. The button measures 4 cm and has a pattern carved in the middle and around the edge. They are new to my collection.

ART DECO BUTTON

This Art Deco button is rather showy being black with cream plastic coated wire wrapped around it forming two elliptical shapes on the front. During this period buttons were made from whatever materials were readily available.

CELLULOID BUTTON

Here is another large Celluloid button this time with a floral design in a “paisley like” style. It really stands out with the red and black outlined in gold. It is a little different being square with rounded corners.

CELLULOID BUTTON

This is a large Celluloid button square in shape with rounded corners. The middle oval section has black and green markings on a yellow background. The outer spaces are black and have a lovely embossed design. It is a rather nice button.
