INCOMPARABLE BUTTON

This is an interesting Ceramic button made by village ladies in Sth. Africa. It is rather naively painted and has a special charm. The colours are nice too. It is square and measures 4 cm so is quite large. I think more of a collectable rather than a functional button.

ENAMEL BUTTON

Here is an enamel button with a Cut Steel border. It has a black background with a delicate floral design in pink and blue which stands out nicely. It measures 3 cm so is a good size.

METAL BUTTON

This button features the head of Medusa which is the symbol for the Versace fashion brand. It has a key patterned border and is a reasonable size at just under 3 cm. Giovanni Versace was an Italian Fashion Designer in the 1900s. Medusa who had hair of snakes comes from ancient Greek mythology.

METAL BUTTON

This is a two piece metal button. The brass decoration is of swirly lines with leaves and is very effective. It is open work and shows the background colour through. It measures 3 cm.

NEW BUTTONS

These buttons have been bought new in haberdashery stores during the period 2005 – 2020. They are mainly in the beige and brown tones and are of some type of plastic. Some are sew through while others have shanks. They are very collectable and represent the fashions of this period.

GLASS BUTTONS

Here is a trio of green glass buttons in the Art Deco style. They are of different greens and have various geometric designs typical of the period. They all have a self shank.

METAL BUTTON

Here is a brass button with Greek like patterned borders. It has a blue painted circle surrounding a wreath. The small inner cream circle is of Celluloid. This button looks sort of regal to me. I wonder if it represents anything in particular?

CELLULOID BUTTON

This Celluloid button is rather striking with it’s marbled centre in grey and black with a tinge of yellow. The black really stands out. It has a brass rope like border and as is common in many Celluloid buttons a japanned back. It measures just over 4 cm.

GLASS BUTTONS

These three little green glass buttons are of a similar colour. Two have delicately handpainted floral designs while the other one is more of a geometric pattern. The paintwork is in good order which is a bonus as many times it is well worn.

CELLULOID BUTTONS

Here are two Victorian Celluloid buttons. The metal on both has been tinted purple and the background Celluloid is in brown shades which is an unusual combination of colours. They have a japanned back with metal loop shank and measure 3 1/2 cm.
