My friend Olwyn bought these two buttons in 2013 while on holidays in England. I think she got them at a craft fair. They are quite different. They appear to be stamped out of the leather.
LEATHER BUTTON
This button is unusual with two circles of wound leather thonging. They surround a flower made of I know not what (maybe a plastic of some type) The back is of tin. This button too I guess may have been worn on a leather coat.
LEATHER BUTTONS
Here are three leather buttons which have been impressed with a design. I especially like the one with the horse’s head. They are good quality buttons and all have a metal loop shank.
LEATHER BUTTONS
These four leather buttons are modern and all have stitching around them.
The square ones are just a little different. Three are sew through type with eyelet trim while the other one has a metal loop shank. They are quite large at 3 cm.
LEATHER BUTTONS
These plaited leather buttons were very popular in the 1960’s & 70’s.
They can still be sometimes found in the opp shops. Some of them have a leather shank incorporated in the plaiting process and some have a metal loop shank. They looked great on men’s tweed sports coats.
SNAKE SKIN BUTTONS
I show firstly an imitation snake skin button then a real snake skin button.
They really have no appeal to me other than for interest sake.
Buttons were made from so many different materials it is just interesting to find one from a material you do not have.
MERMAID LEATHER BUTTON
This very plain button is made from “Mermaid Leather” which is in fact Fish skin.
The leather is produced in Esperance, Western Australia. It has a brass back and shank.
LEATHER BUTTONS AND BUCKLE
A lot of these plaited leather buttons were made in various patterns over many years.
Some have a leather shank and some a metal loop shank. They were used especially on tweed sports coats in the 1960’s and 70’s and were very suitable. They have a hand made look about them. You can still find them in opp shops today.
LEATHER BUTTONS
I think the outer part of these buttons is a type of leather dyed brown in one case and blue in the other.
In each case the centre is of brass with a different floral design .
They both have a pad shank which I have shown.
