BONE BUTTON

This bone button has been completely dyed with the sepia colour all over the edges and the back. It has then been carved away leaving the natural bone colour showing a flower design. It is a modern button and I wonder if it was made in Nepal. It is a two hole sew through type and measures just on 3 cm.

PHAROAH HEAD BUTTON

Here is a button with two materials; mother of pearl set in metal. There was a craze at one stage ( I’m not sure when ) when Egyptian symbols were very popular. This button is just that and shows a Pharoah’s (or King’s ) head which is similar to the Sphinx in white metal centred on the MOP. I can’t imagine wearing a button like this but then if it was the fashion anything goes! The button is well made and quite heavy and measures a little under 3 cm.

GARTER BUTTON

This is a fabric covered Garter button which is modern. I do not know it’s age and I got it as a swap button in 1923. It has a tin back and measures 2 1/4 cm. I do not have and would love to have an original Garter button with ribbon.

FABRIC BUTTONS

I don’t remember where I got all these fabric covered buttons and buckles from although I think it was an opp shop. They were all together and the buckles are all different fabrics and I think from the same period. They are pastel shades and floral. Would they be from the 1940s=50s? They have not been used and maybe they are old shop stock.! Like I sometimes say if only they could talk.

CERAMIC BUTTONS

Here are four ceramic buttons which have a rather naive look about them. The top two have flowers incised into them with a bright coloured glaze complimenting them. The other two have a white background and geometric patterns outlined in black and coloured in. I do not know where they were made or by whom. They are all two hole sew through type.

PORCELAIN BUTTONS

These handmade porcelain buttons were made by Tracey Sharkey of Victoria in the 2005 – 2010 period. They were mainly available in Art Gallery Shops and I bought some both in Bendigo and Shepparton. I like the way each button is just a portion of a leaf or flower and not a complete picture. It shows a bit of creativeness.

PAUL POIRET

Here are some photos of Paul Poiret and his Fashion House in France. His designs were certainly quite modern for their time and I am really lucky to have some buttons used by him during the period 1910 – 1925. If only they could talk!

FABRIC BUTTONS

Yes, I am still alive and here is another post at long last. I love these Fabric buttons made with black thread, metallic thread and beads. They come from the 1910-1925 period and were used by French Fashion Designer Paul Poiret. I can only imagine what smart outfits they were used on during that period.
