This is a group of Celluloid buttons in shades of black, browns and greys which were popular colours of the time. You could call them drab but I find they have a certain charm.
CELLULOID BUTTONS
BLACK GLASS BUTTONS
I think these two black glass buttons are probably semi-mourning buttons from the early 1900’s. They both have a combination of gloss and matte finish which was common during the reign of Queen Victoria. They are lovely designs and both have a four way metal box shank.
METAL BUTTON
Here is a white metal button in a typical Art Nouveau style with it’s lovely flowing lines and floral design. I often wonder who designed these buttons and how much preparation went into the designing of them. It has a tin back and brass loop shank.
PERSPEX BUTTON
This perspex button is new to my collection. It is square shaped will yellow and purple flowers embedded in the perspex which reflects in the bevelled edges on the back. It has a brass loop shank and measures 2 cm. It is the only one of this type in my collection and I love it.
INLAID HORN BUTTON
I believe this Horn button is very old and it is interesting with the very fine inlaid floral design in Mother of Pearl. How they do it so fine I do not know. It is hollowed out at the back with a self shank.
GLASS BUTTONS
This is a group of clear green Depression glass buttons from the 1930’s. There is a variety of greens and designs (some being cut glass and some being moulded.) A couple are sew through type and the others have a self shank.
METAL BUTTONS
These two buttons are of white metal and I believe they are of American Indian make. One has a geometric design and the other a sort of Totem Pole. They are only small at 1 1/2cm and have a metal loop shank. I find them interesting.
ENAMEL BUTTON
Here is a late 1800’s or early 1900’s enamelled brass button. It has a pierced border with green and blue enamelling. The centre part has a white background with a delicate sprig of tiny mauve flowers. The overall effect is really nice. It measures 2 1/2 cm.
METAL PICTURE BUTTONS
These two moulded white metal buttons have quite a lot of detail. Pictured on them are two figures bowing down to an Oriental couple with their fan and parasol. A cherry blossom tree is on the right. They have had black paint applied and then rubbed back showing the scene up easily.
BUTTON GROUP DAY
Yesterday arvo was out little button collector’s group Christmas get together. As usual we had a very interesting and enjoyable time sharing buttons and talking about them. We had some lovely buttons to show and tell. Our topic for the day was Enamel buttons and I show some in the photos above. We also had our little Christmas gift swap which is a button to the value of approximately $5. There were some nice ones amongst them and it is just a bit of fun. Of course we topped it all off with a cuppa and some nibbles to share; a lovely way to finish off our year.
