Both of these buttons are blonde horn, one having some carving and a brass centre, the other an embossed brass strip across it. They are approximately 2 1/2cm. in diameter.
WINTER TIME
Today is 1st June, first day of Winter for us here in Australia. I quite like Winter as I feel the heat much more than the cold. To be inside and it is pouring rain or windy gives me a comfy feeling likewise to get into my dressing gown at say 5pm and snuggle in for the evening is lovely. We have had some beautiful Autumn days, good to be out and about. It is actually sunny now and I am going with my friend Di for a drive to Numurkah ( half an hour away) to look in the opp shops and have lunch. What a nice way to spend a few hours and who knows what we might find. We had a great bonanza last time we went there, maybe a few buttons. I have a house full of treasures!! (room for a few more still) Let us all have a nice day whatever.
BUTTON COVERS
I have just recently picked up these two cards of button covers at the local Hospice Opp Shop. It must have been my lucky day to have found them both at the same time.
What a nifty way to dress up a garment. I have quite a few single ones but not many full sets which are always nice to have.
BRASS FILIGREE BUTTON
This button is brass with black and silver paint around the outside.
The middle is a flower shape with a claw set cut steel in the centre. It is of medium size.
METAL BUTTONS
Here is a little group of five modern white metal buttons each with a simple geometric design on them. I do not know all the different metals but they are pewter like.
They are all approx 2 1/2cm in diameter and are charming in their simplicity.
CAMEO TYPE BUTTON
I do not know what this cameo type button is made of. My guess is that it is a stone of some sort carved and set into white metal.
The lady’s head is very deep making a rather bulky button. What a lot of work has gone into the making of it. It measures 3 1/2 X 3 cms.
METAL BUTTON (MODERN)
This white metal button is chunky and heavy. It is a domed shape and the design is flower like. It has a key shank and measures just under 3 cm.
BAKELITE BUTTON
This button which is quite large at 4 cm combines three materials.
The dark brown base is bakelite, the scrolly escutcheon is metal and the amber coloured block is glass. What a lovely and dramatic button.
It has a metal loop shank. The glass is bevelled and claw set and the escutcheon is riveted on as can be seen in the photo.
METAL BUTTON
I think this is a beautiful button. It contains purple tinted metal with white metal.
The design is wonderful comprising scrolls and flowers. It is 3 1/2cm in diameter and has a brass loop shank.
METAL AND BLACK GLASS BUTTON
At 3 1/2 cm in diameter, this button has a decorative floral white metal border encasing a black glass with gold lustre centre.
How ornate is that! The border is so intricate with pretty flowers and leaves and is a work of art on it’s own. No wonder I call old buttons miniature works of art. It has a brass loop shank.
