Here is a group of little black glass buttons, several with a different pattern.
Most of them have a brass loop shank, a couple having self shanks. They are all under 12mm in diameter.
BLACK GLASS BUTTONS
GLASS BUTTONS
These three buttons are Bimini type buttons.
They are made of glass and have a brass plate and shank attached to the back. The gold paint adds a real sparkle to them.
LEATHER BUTTONS
I think the outer part of these buttons is a type of leather dyed brown in one case and blue in the other.
In each case the centre is of brass with a different floral design .
They both have a pad shank which I have shown.
METAL BUTTONS
This is another group of buttons being part of the private button collection which I purchased in November.
They are Victorian buttons made of metal with some tan fabric (suede or velvet) and a little cream celluloid included in the design. I feel that they are very nice buttons.
There are two different backs used, one being japanned with black paint, the other just showing the tin. They are just over 1 cm in diameter.
CINNIBAR BUTTON AND BUCKLE
This buckle and button are made of Cinnibar.
There have been many layers of red lacquer applied to a tin base. It is then carved into various designs, mainly floral. Red is the most popular colour used although there are some others used. It was used in both China and Japan.
GREEN PORCELAIN PIN CUSHION
This porcelain pin cushion is reasonably large.
A shoe or boot seemed to be a very popular subject for pin cushions in the early 1900’s. They were made of various materials.
CELLULOID BUTTONS
A lot of Celluloid buttons are earthy browns and fawns, but these two groups are nice and colourful.
The three chunky green buttons have interesting patterns and each has a cream back with a Celluloid shank.
The striking red oval buttons show a diamond design in black and gold and are typical of the Art Deco period. They have a black Japanned back. Each group has been a gift to me.
METAL PICTURE BUTTON
This white metal button is quite thick and has a man and lady moulded into it.
It sounds hollow and the back has two holes in it. It measures 3 cm in diameter so is a nice size.
ENAMEL BUTTONS
I really like these two enamelled buttons.
They have the added feature of cut steels which makes them just a bit more special. Their design suggests the Art Nouveau period with it’s flowing lines which are always pleasing.
The colours are quite different too, one with the cherry red and blue and the other having an orange colour with a little pink flower. They both have a metal loop shank and are just over 2 cm in diameter.
PASSEMENTERIE BUTTONS
Another new acquisition to my collection are these buttons made up with crocheted thread work and some thread also wound around a mould.
What a lovely group they are. There is a combination of ecru and pink thread used in their design; a lot of work to make one button.
