This Japanese Satsuma button is just a little different as it shows a Geisha girl looking through what I think is a doorway. It has a lot of orange and gold which is a good combination and black accents making a rather nice button.
SATSUMA BUTTON
PERSPEX BUTTON
This is a Perspex button with tiny artificial flowers in purple and yellow embedded in it. It is square and has been angled back on the sides as can be seen on the back view. It has a brass loop shank and measures a little under 2 cm. It is rather quaint I think.
NEW BUTTONS
Here is my stash of black buttons which have been bought new over the last say 15years. I do not buy so many these days but used to quite regularly go to the haberdashery store and check out their buttons. You could just buy one from a tube. Nowadays at Spotlight they have packs of 2 or 4 and you have to buy the pack and they are expensive now. These are a variety of materials and designs. I visit a friend each Saturday morning and take buttons to show her. She loves to study their designs and really enjoys them which makes me feel good too. I have quite a nice collection of “new” buttons and keep them in a special set of drawers.
PORCELAIN BUTTONS
Here is a group of four handmade porcelain buttons made by Tracey Sharkey in 2007. They feature a variety of flowers or part thereof which is sort of fascinating. I believe they are transfer printed. I have several sets of her buttons and have bought them at Art Galleries.
METAL BUTTON
This is an open work brass button depicting a daisy. It is a sort of in the Art Nouveau style. The brass has been tinted green which makes it a little different. It measures a little under 3 cm.
METAL BUTTON
Here is a metal button, the centre being painted brass. It is embossed with a flower and ribbon design which is quite unique. I have no other buttons anything like it. There are a couple of scratches on the paintwork but it is otherwise in good order. It has a metal loop shank and measures 3 cm.
LITHOGRAPH BUTTONS
Here are three Lithograph Men’s Waistcoat buttons featuring ladies in large hats. They are probably part of a set of six which was common in the late 1890s – 1900s. They are set in a gold cup with loop shank. I think that it is a strange subject for men’s clothing.
ENAMEL BUTTON
This is a modern enamelled brass button which to me is very striking. It is domed and shows an orange/red flower which is complimented with lovely blues, greens and yellows making it very colourful. I think it is hollow and it has a small hole on each side. I guess it may have been made in Japan.
BEATRIX POTTER BUTTONS
Here is a Porcelain button with the portrait of Beatrix Potter ( 1866-1943 ) an English children’s book author and illustrator of the time. The other two buttons are plastic and feature two characters from her well known and loved books from all over the world. She led a lonely life and loved all her pet animals which inspired her to create the characters in her books.
IVORY BUTTON
This Ivory button is one of my favourites. It has a scrimshaw picture of a Geisha girl with a sunshade finely done in black. There is just a small touch of orange and blue which is very tastefully done. It has a self shank and measures just under 3 1/2 cm.
