Buttonsplus

This Satsuma button is new to my collection and was given to me by my friend Carole. It is reasonably small at 1 1/2cm and is covered in little “butterfly like” markings in various bright colours. It is edged with a rim of gold.

Made for Beutron in the 1950’s, these buttons have a disc of green plastic surrounded by a decorative gold border which offsets it nicely. I have a copy of a Button Advertisement from The Women’s Weekly of 1952 showing these buttons.

These two clear blue glass buttons are such a beautiful colour. They are square in shape and have been facetted which gives them lots of sparkle.

Here are two sets of Button Covers belonging to a friend. They are both very interesting, one being of white metal with a floral centrepiece and the other being popular Disney characters. They are a fun way to “dress up” a plain button on a garment.

I think this button is made of Casein. It is a barrel shape in dark brown with several lines “etched” into it. The ends are cut off at an angle making it an interesting shape.

This metal button has O’Neill 1952 printed on it and is a Fashion button. It measures 2 cm and has a loop shank. The O’Neill brand originally started in California in 1952 by Jack O’Neill in surfwear. They ventured out into day wear as well.

This button is made of black painted tin with the centre piece in a brown colour which I think is Celluloid. It has a tin back and measures just over 2 1/2cm. It would be smart on a tan coloured garment.

This button is made from a Quandong nut which is from a native tree of Australia. I have seen a commercially made button but this one was made by a friend. It is rather unique.

Here is a nicely carved Bakelite button in a deep brown which was a popular colour for this type of button (black also) It is quite large at 4 cm and has a metal loop shank.

This plastic button is rather large at 4 cm. It is a mottley blue/grey and features two circular indentations and incised straight lines at top and bottom. I guess it would have been an overcoat button.
