This is a lovely MOP realistic flower button which has been carved.
The reverse photo shows a brass loop shank has been fitted. The colour of the back of the shell is also visible.
MOTHER OF PEARL BUTTON
HO, HO, HO!! IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME
Well, it is that time of the year. 2017 is drawing to a close and yesterday was Christmas Day and we all got together for a fun time together. We had lovely salads and various meats with plenty for all, not to mention the bon bons and cool drinks. I must admit that a cup of tea quenches my thirst best on a hot day. The iced drinks are nice while you are drinking them. Christmas pudding and brandy custard was not far behind. It is a nice chance for me to see my nieces and nephews too as they are not local. Of course with teenagers around there were lots of Electronics going. What a different world. A pleasant time was had by all and they all wended there way homewards at the close of the day.
SMALL METAL BUTTONS
None of these buttons are over 1 1/2 cm in diameter.
They are all metal, some tinted and some with cut steels. The designs are all different and they make a nice group. They are a new addition to my collection.
SILVER NEEDLE CASES AND THIMBLE
Here is a little group of silver needle cases and a silver thimble.
One is perfectly plain and one nicely etched. The one with the tassle is only white metal.
WHITE GLASS BUTTON
Here we have a white glass button with a cameo type lady’s head.
The background has been painted purple and the hair a tan colour. It is a rather sweet little button measuring about 18 x 15 mm. and has a self shank.
CELLULOID BUTTONS
Both of these buttons are single pieces of Celluloid moulded into their pattern and shape.
One has a type of basketweave design in brown and cream. It is just over 4 cm in diameter. The other is a realistic flower button measuring 3 1/2 cm. They both have a Celluloid shank added to the back.
VICTORIAN PERFUME BUTTONS
These buttons are new to my collection. I previously only had 3 or 4 perfume buttons.
These are all fairly small buttons ( mostly under 1 1/2 cm in diameter), being metal with some fabric (usually velvet) incorporated in their design. The ladies would put some perfume on to the fabric to make them smell nice and also not to run the risk of staining their clothes.
Stories have been told that during the Civil War, ladies would remove a button and give to their loved one going to war as a reminder of them. The soldier would keep it in his pocket.
OLD NEEDLE BOOKS
Here are two nicely made needle books, one with a lady holding a basket of flowers, the other an English Cottage.
They are well made from good quality paper and would have made a lovely gift in their time. It is nice to find them in good order. They were made in England.
BAKELITE BUCKLE AND BUTTONS
These two green cockatoo buttons are certainly different and it is nice to have a buckle in the same colour.
I have displayed them on part of an old water colour of mine which was destined for the scrap heap and I think it suits ok.
METAL BUTTONS
Here are two realistic buttons, both being a leaf. One has an insect and the other a frog.
They are quite fascinating although I am not sure what type of garment they would be worn on.
