Buttonsplus

These two Ceramic buttons are both bold and striking. Although their designs are simple they are effective. They would suit neutral coloured and hand woven fabrics or a nice plain linen. The cream one measures 3 cm and the black one just over 2 cm.

Here are two simply designed Satsuma porcelain buttons each with a seated Geisha girl. They are pleasing colours. I like Satsuma buttons and have quite a nice collection of them. I prefer the older ones to the modern designs.

This ceramic button was bought for me by my friend while she was in Newfoundland in 2014. Newfoundland is an island just off the east coast of Canada. The card says on the back Snouts and Sprouts – handmade ceramic creations, St. Johns, Newfoundland. The button has a simple design and measures 3 cm.

These two blonde horn buttons each have an inlaid silver design. The designs are both floral, the one on the left being much busier than that on the right. I think they are from the late 1890s. They have a metal loop shank and measure just over 2 cm. They look much better in reality.

These two modern buttons both have a bone centre and have been carved in a simple design. I think the outer on each is horn but am not quite sure. I wish I were more knowledgeable when it comes to buttons! They are both quite large and would look good on a natural weave coat.

Here are two groups of different plastic buttons which are both common designs. I guess they may come from the late 1940s – 1950s. They both have self shanks. I can just see them on a simple styled cotton dress.

Here are three more Perfume buttons each with different coloured material in them. The blue one sort of has a background of material where the other two just have the cut outs filled. The metal on the middle button has been tinted red giving it a different look. I am always amazed at the variety of designs in buttons.

These three metal buttons each have some fabric incorporated in their design. I have quite a few similar type buttons and I bought them as part of a small private button collection several years ago. I have them in a box and when you open the lid you can smell the perfume even though they are so old. The story goes that the ladies used to put a few drops of perfume on the material to give off a nice scent to distract from other odours. Velvet was a very commonly used fabric.
