Buttonsplus

I like these three buttons which are chunky, smooth and tactile. I am not sure what they are made of but wonder if they are Bakelite. They each have been carved with a simple design and have a metal loop shank.

This group of buttons is just a small selection of Perfume buttons which were in a small private button collection which I bought a few years ago. I have them displayed in a fancy box and every time you lift the lid you can smell the perfume. They all have some type of fabric in the centre on which the wearer put a drop of perfume. They are from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Here are some vegetables nearly good enough to eat. They are realistic buttons made of resin and are modern. They would really only be suitable for a craft project.

These novelty buttons are just a bit of fun and are bright and cheery. They are plastic and modern. They are sew through type and measure 2 1/2 cm. The colour combinations are jazzy and make you smile.

Here is a small group of butterfly buttons which are just bright and cheery. They are craft wood buttons which are probably lazer cut and would just be used to embellish a special craft project. It is amazing how fine they can be cut.

These special type of plastic buttons were created by Lea Stein a famous French Jeweller in the 1960s. The colours and iridescence are wonderful in reality but do not show up well in the photo. The special plastic material was created by her Industrial Chemist husband. These buttons are not so easy to come by.

Here is a brass button with cut steel decoration. It has a fine linear pattern with some sort of filigree work too. The cut steels are rivetted on separately as can be seen from the back. It measures 3 cm so is quite a nice size.

This set of Australian bird buttons is new to my collection. It is a pity the cockatoo hasn’t shown up as it is much paler than the rest. They were made by Sue James of Maldon and are transfer printed with a black circle around them just to finish them off. I am a bird lover so can enjoy these buttons. They are purely a collector’s item.

I received this Mother of Pearl button recently as a birthday present from a friend. It is nicely carved with a scene depicting three Oriental figures. I’m afraid that the photo did not come out too well which is a pity. It measures a little under 3 cm and has a brass loop shank.

These two glass buttons are just a little different being realistic Japanese lanterns. The orange one is perfectly plain while the green one has painted decoration. They both have a silver lustre trim. Orange is not a real common colour in old buttons.
