Buttonsplus

These three wooden buttons were bought new in a haberdashery shop a few years ago. They each depict a different species of owl. They are sew through type and I couldn’t imagine wearing them on a garment so consider them just a collector’s item.

These two buttons were bought new several years ago. They are made of some type of plastic. They have a floral design sort of embossed on them and are of an irregular shape which makes them a bit different.

Here are two painted brass buttons quite different to each other. One has a floral design in a sort of Art Nouveau style while the other is more a geometric pattern. They are quite colourful. They have a loop shank and measure 2 1/2 cm.

I do not know anything about this brass button. It has a portrait of Queen Victoria on the front and the back says Austrian Make. It is a fairly small button at a little over 1 1/2 cm.

This elaborate velvet frame contains 24 lovely Austrian Tinies buttons. I enjoy these buttons because of the minute detail and materials used to create such small buttons. You need a magnifying glass to really appreciate the workmanship of them. En masse they make a nice display.

Here are two original Beutron button cards which are modern. They show Coconut shell buttons one lot being realistic flower shaped with four holes. The other large button is carved with a geometric pattern and is also a sew through type with just two holes. They are from the 2008 period.

This is a clear perspex button with some artificial flowers embedded in it. It is bevelled off at the back and has a brass loop shank. I really fancied this button when I saw it as purple, yellow and green are three of my favourite colours. It is the only button of this type that I have in my collection.

Here are three modern enamelled brass buttons with strong rich colours which is a nice change from the common pinks and blues of many with a floral design. These buttons have more of a geometric design or perhaps Art Deco style.

Here is a Celluloid button in a sort of khaki/fawn colour with black and beige swirly lines around it. The centre is beige and features some red berries and green leaves. It is quite different to many of the other celluloid buttons in my collection. It measures a little under 3 cm and has a japanned back and metal loop shank.

Here is a Victorian Celluloid button in a frame. One the same has been carefully dismantled to show how it is put together which is fiddley. It is made up of seven different parts that must be put in the correct order to achieve the finished button. They are not just stamped out of a machine in 2 minutes.
