Here is a small group of five Art Deco buttons in various sizes and colours of green, black and brown. I was pleased to be given them recently. Wouldn’t they enhance a garment from the 1930’s.
ART DECO BUTTONS
MOTHER OF PEARL BUTTONS
What an ornate pattern has been etched onto these buttons. They are of Mother of Pearl which has been coloured a beautiful bright blue before being etched. (maybe by laser)
They measure 2 1/2cm and are modern. My friend Jacqui gave them to me.
OLD PLASTIC BUTTONS
These four plastic buttons all have a cut out design; two different designs and two different colours. They are old buttons but how old I do not know.
ART DECO BUTTONS
These two buttons were among a group given to me recently.
They are both mottled plastic (maybe Bakelite) in a taupe colour with a tin trim in a geometric shape. This is typically Art Deco style. One is quite fine and a sew through type while the other is rather chunky with a brass loop shank.
FABRIC BUTTONS
Here are some more new buttons from Jimmy Buttons shop in Fitzroy.
They are beaded in black on black material and look quite nice. I wonder where they were made and by whom. ( a lot of hand sewing)
ART DECO BUTTONS
Here are two more recent acquisitions to my collection. They are of the same design but with a different colour combination and are of mottled plastic. The trim adds a great contrast to an otherwise plain button.
CASEIN BUTTONS
These black and white buttons were very popular in the 1930’s. The colours and designs contrast nicely. I have quite a few of this type of button but these two are new to my collection.
OLD BUTTON
This is a nice button comprising a cream background with a fancy brass overlay. I am not sure if the cream is Celluloid or Painted Tin. (It has a really high gloss surface)
It has a tin back and shank and measures a little under 3 cm. It was given to me recently.
PLASTIC BUTTONS
These three buttons were given to me recently and look like they are from the 1930’s – 40’s period. The contrasting stripes and colours really look great.
NEW BUTTON
This button is quite large at just under 3 1/2cm. It reminds me of the stone Tiger’s Eye. It is of some type of plastic and set into a metal rim and has a metal loop shank inset into the back. I think it is a smart button.
