Here are two different buttons both with chips of turquoise set into them. One is domed silver and the other flat brass. I think the silver one may be from India. They are similar in size being 1 1/2 cm.
METAL AND TURQUOISE BUTTONS
ENAMEL BUTTONS
I think these two buttons are called cold enamel. They have a dull finish.
One is in greens and pinks with a blue flower. The second one is an Art Nouveau style with flowers on a white ground and lots of scrolls. It also has a scallopped edge. They are similar in size being 2 1/4 cm.
GLASS BUTTON
I think the colours of this button are lovely. The centre is a light grey while the two outer sections are a nice blend of blues and greens. It is also outlined with a gold lustre.
The photo of the back shows a different type of shank. It measures 2 cm.
FABRIC COVERED BUTTON
Here is an old fabric covered button which has a thread back which is always interesting. What a lot of work to create it.
The fabric itself is a fawn with purple and red floral. It measures 1 1/2 cm.
CUT STEEL BUTTONS
These three buttons all have cut steels incorporated in their design. The cut steels were made from old horseshoe nails. Each of these buttons are nice in their own way.
One has a type of basketweave brass background with flowers and cut steels as centres. The next is white metal with three leaves and four cut steels. The last one has a star shape with a styalized flower in the centre and six cut steels.
BAKELITE AND BRASS BUTTON
This button has carved square orange/brown bakelite set into a brass backing combined with a brass cross in the centre.
It is a fascinating button with the brass back being embossed in a floral pattern. What a pity to hide it. It is not exactly square being 25 mm x 23 mm.
ENAMEL BUTTONS
Here are two pretty enamelled brass buttons of the same design but with a different colour scheme.
The flowers show up nicely on the white background. The border is so decorative and very complimentary. They measure 2 cm x 1 1/4cm.
PLASTIC BUTTONS
These three old plastic buttons each have a cut out design but are really different.
I love all buttons for different reasons be they a Satsuma porcelain or a more common plastic one. They all have a story to tell.
METAL BUTTONS (PAINTED)
These two buttons are both made of pierced brass and I guess would be from the 1920’s – 30’s..
Both have patterns picked out with coloured paints, one being sort of geometric, the other a floral theme. They are both 27mm with a loop shank. I think they are rather nice.
URANIUM GLASS BUTTON
This white glass button is a nice size at a little over 3 cm.
It has a triangular look as three sides have been angled down to the outer edge. Black paint has been added to the simple etched design which really looks great. It has a self shank.
The third photo with the UV light shining on it makes the button glow green which indicates the uranium content in the glass.
