Here are three new wooden buttons which I bought in a Patchwork shop in Kyabram last year.
I love birds and thought these owls looked great on the light coloured wood, sort of natural like.
NEW BUTTONS (WOOD)
STUDIO BUTTONS – By Bob Benson, U.S.A.
These buttons are made from Vegetable Ivory and were made by Bob Benson.
He has dyed and carved a decorative border and inserted a torquoise stone in one, a fossil in another and a jasper stone in the last one.
They are rather unique and becoming rather expensive. These ones were made in the 2011 – 12 period and measure a little over 4 cm so are quite large.
PLASTIC BUTTONS
These yellow plastic buttons have a cut out design with several coloured flowers painted on them. They would certainly brighten up a garment. Maybe they are from the 1940’s – 50’s.
GLASS BUTTONS
These glass buttons are modern and made in Czechoslovakia.
All of them have a design painted on a dark brown or black background also with some gold lustre. They have quite a dramatic look about them. The first two are just over 2 cm and have a self shank while the third is just over 2 1/2cm and has a metal four way box shank.
NEW BUTTONS
Black and white always looks striking and here are three such examples of new buttons made of some type of plastic.
They are sort of like a modern version of the lovely black and white casein buttons of the 1930’s – 40’s. Fashion like other things goes round in circles.
CELLULOID BUTTON
I was pleased to receive these buttons from my friend Olwyn. She bought them in an Antique Shop in Sharlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 2014. (That is the place of Anne of Green Gables fame)
They are quite different being square and two coloured, having a design pressed into the thin sheet of Celluloid. The shank is of Celluloid also and they are a little under 3 cm .
WATER COLOURS
Over the years I have done many paintings both in oils and then in water colours.
I do not paint now but enjoy drawing. At present I am doing a drawing journal with nature studies from photos I have taken. I meet up with my friend Di to sketch mostly each week. I still have some of my water colours hanging in my home. They are all happy memories for me. Here are some of them.
PLASTIC BUTTONS
This is a great group of old Plastic buttons.
They feature a jockey on his horse surrounded by a horseshoe. What a good design and it is nice to have a few in different colours.
SHELL BUTTONS
Maybe ten years ago I bought a cheap garment made in India at a local opp shop.
It had these carved shell buttons on it and they took my fancy. They have a real hand made look and it was a little unusual to have a different pattern on each button on the one garment.
METALIZED PLASTIC BUTTON
This button represents the Astrology sign Pisces (two fish) which covers the period February 21 to March 20.
As my birthday is March 6 I am a Piscesian (is that a word or have I just invented it!! ) so had to buy this button just for the fun of it.
