Here is a trio of Celluloid buttons in Autumn shades of colour. They all have a simple geometric design and are sew through types. I have them mounted on a banner of various celluloid buttons which look good in their colour scheme.

This button is purely made of Cut Steels which are attached to a metal backing plate. It is probably from the 1890s and would have glistened under the lights of a chandelier. It measures a little over 3 cm.

Here is a set of Lithograph men’s waistcoat buttons from the late 1800s. They feature pictures of the glamorous ladies of the time ( possibly actresses.) I find it strange for that to be on men’s buttons but that is how things were back then. They were often made in sets of six and originally may have been a boxed set. If only they could talk!

Here is a modern original card of buttons put out by Beutron. They are realistic buttons in the shape of a flower and made from coconut shell. I bought them new in 2008. They were made in China.

I do not know how old this wooden button with carving and cut steels added is. It doesn’t look so old so maybe someone has handmade it. It is an unusual combination of materials. It has a brass loop shank and measures just over 2 1/2 cm.

Here is a group of four ceramic buttons featuring different types of fruit. They are simple in design and outlined in black which really makes them stand out. They are sew through type and measure 1 1/2 cm so are not very big. The colours are much stronger in reality.

Here is an original button card with orange pressed plastic buttons probably from the 1930s. The artwork is typical of the time and is more interesting than the plain cards of today. The cards were more appealing back then. Things change all the time and this is no exception.

This is a sew through type black glass button with silver lustre. The band across the middle has lots of little creepy crawlies on it which is unusual. They are not what I would choose to put on a button but there is no accounting for taste! It measures 2 1/2 cm.

This metal button has been tinted a maroon/purple colour. It has a finely detailed floral type design in white metal which shows a pink colour underneath. It is a rather nice button and measures 3 1/2 cm. It has a brass loop shank. Purple and red were common colours to tint metal buttons in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Here is a large chunky bakelite button in a brown shade. It has a very delicate filigree brass escutcheon in the middle. The bakelite has been simply carved with angular lines. It measures 4 cm. I guess it could have been used on a thick overcoat.
