I do like black glass buttons and although I have quite a lot I couldn’t leave these ones at the recent Buttonfest. They were cheap and in good order. Some of them have an Art Deco look while the others are a more scrolly design.
BLACK GLASS BUTTONS
CELLULOID BUTTON
Here is an interesting Celluloid button in an Ochre type colour. Many Celluloid buttons were earthy colours. Maybe they were the colours of the 1930’s – 40’s period.
It is made of a moulded sheet of Celluloid and has no backing. It is a sew through type button and measures 3 1/2 cm.
BUTTON CARDS
Here are two original Button cards which I have just obtained. One is Lady Fashion Quality Pearls and the other is trademarked Luckday.
The type of advertising always intrigues me on these older cards as it is so different to today’s advertising.
SATSUMA BUCKLE
I love Satsuma porcelain and here is a buckle ( or actually half a buckle ) It is not easy to find both sides which are matching and connect with a hook.
It is a typical floral design with a Chrysanthemum and has a royal blue border. Most of the scrolly gold work on the border has worn off over the years.
METAL BUTTON
I was sold this button as Celluloid but it is actually brass with a floral design pressed and painted onto it. It does look like buffed celluloid. I think it is a nice button. It is quite large at just under 3 1/2 cm.
DOMED GLASS BUTTON
This is a modern domed button with a clockface and the words ” We are all mad here ” on it. I think it is a Mad Hatter button from the Alice in Wonderland collection.
My friend Sonia gave it to me at the recent Buttonfest in Melbourne with my purchases suggesting that we all ( button collectors ) should have one. It is just a bit of fun.
BUTTON COVERS
Here are six Cameo Style button covers. They are made from some type of plastic but look quite realistic.
You use them to ” dress up ” a garment by sliding them over the existing plain button and snapping them together. What a nifty idea.
BUTTONFEST DAY
I show now some photos from the Buttonfest held in Melbourne on 13th October, 2018.
They are all from the Victorian Button Collectors Club display there. The theme was for buttons of the world and there were some really beautiful buttons and buckles displayed. Of course there were thousands of buttons for sale and I had my yearly splurge which I will share later. It was another successful and well run show.
METAL BUTTONS
Here we have two brass buttons with a ” horsey ” theme. The larger one shows a horse and horseshoe while the smaller one has a horseshoe and whip. They have been popular subject matter for buttons over the years.
PLASTIC BUTTONS
These plain coloured buttons are Chef’s buttons. They are detachable from the Chef’s white shirt and certainly are not at all decorative, purely functional. I think the different colours denotes the different stages of a Chef’s working life but am not sure.
