These vegetable ivory buttons have been dyed a dark colour. The two which have a circle carved into them show the natural colour of the corozo nut from which they are made.
One has a flag embossed on it with the dye colour rubbed back.
Here is another button with braid wrapped around a mould (probably wooden) in a star like pattern. It would have been a time consuming task. It is very effective and may have been worn on a fur coat.
This coconut shell button has a nude lady printed on it.
It is a modern button and was given to me by my friend Sandra for Christmas 2017. I have a smaller button of the same design.
I made this button in 2007 on an antique piece of button covering equipment. It belonged to Kate Boulton who owned the button shop Buttonmania in Melbourne at the time.
It is a piece of hand dyed material and was just a fun thing to do. It is quite large at 4 cm.
I guess this old button would have a wooden mould inside the crocheted outer. It does not have a shank as such and can just be sewn onto a garment through the crochet stitches on the back. At 3 1/2cm it is quite large.
These three buttons are of painted tin. They all have a white background with a coloured design.
They are backmarked TCHSCOSLOVAQUIE which I can’t translate.
This little group of vegetable ivory buttons are quite plain and all small at 1 cm, the larger one nearly 1 1/2cm.
They clean up nicely. As mentioned before they are made from the corozzo nut from a palm tree in South America.
Here we have three modern braided buttons.
The red and navy ones are the same with a matching plastic disc in the centre. The black one has a velvet centre surrounded by a brass rim. They all have a black plastic back with the markings LPC 45 and measure just under 3 cm.
Here are two wooden buttons which have a floral design painted on them. They are both new having been bought in Malvern Button Shop recently.
Here are five vegetable ivory buttons, one being 2 cm, the others all 1cm.
The large one has a cut away geometric design. Three have a pattern pressed into them and the other one has been carved. They are really quite nice buttons but do not show up so well in the photo.
