Buttonsplus

Here are three buffed celluloid buttons each with a floral design. They have been painted and rubbed back to reveal the cream colour. They are in yellows and browns and make a nice group. Good colours for Autumn!

This is a brass button trimmed with Cut Steels in various sizes. It has a metal plate on the back to which the steels are rivetted individually. They sparkle nicely in the light. It measures 3 1/2 cm so is quite large.

Both these Celluloid buttons are in a grey and cream colour scheme. They also are both trimmed with brass; one having a central square with a flower design and the other with nine small brass squares with a star design. They are simple in design but quite nice. They have a japanned back and measure a little over 2 1/2 cm.

Here are two plastic ( I think they may be Casein ) buttons of the same design but in different colours. They are square and have been dyed and then cut away to reveal the cream colour. I suggest that they are Art Deco style. They measure a little under 2 cm.

Here is a group of seven glass buttons in different shades of mauve. They are moulded glass and two are in an Art Deco style and one has gold lustre. They also are all self shank buttons.

Beatrix Potter was an English children’s story book writer and illustrator and The Tale of Peter Rabbit is the first book she wrote. Her books are still famous around the world. The realistic button shows Peter Rabbit eating radishes just as the illustration depicts. She was a very good artist and had a great imagination.

Here are four different button covers which were made to dress up a plain button to alter the look of a garment. They would have been made in sets of four or six. I have several different ones in my collection. They are not of great quality but the general look is okay. They open up and slide over the button and then snap into place so are quite easy to use.

Here is a button of white metal in a sort of triangle shape. It has a black circular disc of which I think is Bakelite with a white metal escutcheon on top. It has a metal loop shank and measures 2 cm. It is quite a striking button.

This is a glass paperweight button which is very colourful. It shows a modern style butterfly and flower. I do not know who made it but it is a bit of fun. I have watched a lady make lampwork glass beads and it is a fascinating craft.

Here are two modern plastic buttons which I bought at a button shop in Melbourne. They are identical in design but in different colour schemes. The floral design is not painted on them but rather embedded in them and they are quite showy. I use the general term plastic as I do not know exactly what they are made from; maybe synthetic. You can see through them.
