Buttonsplus

These white metal buttons are modern and have a squiggly pattern cut out of them on one edge which is unusual and they are not perfectly circular. So overall they are sort of abstract in their design. Actually I quite like them.

This is one lot of buttons I have found at Hospice Opp Shop. Sometimes I bought 2 or 3 small bottles full but that was a few years ago. I still check regularly as they are near The Milkbar where I sometimes have lunch. They don’t often have buttons now but it was always fun to sort through them; like a Tatts ticket to me. This lot was pretty good. It is the fun of the chase that gets you in.

This button is of matte finish clear glass in an oval shape. It is decorated with silver lustre dotted lines in a sort of abstract way which look a little like cut steels. It has a self shank. It is a reasonable size but I can’t measure it as I can’t find it!!

Here are three Arita porcelain buttons representing some of the seven Immortal Gods of Japan. Although you would not call them pretty, they are interesting and that is the case with a lot of buttons. They all make up a collection

Here are two original button cards with the buttons intact. They are ordinary buttons but I like the artwork on the cards. The producers went to a lot of trouble making the cards interesting. Today if buttons are on cards they are just plain; just a sign of the times. Not as much “care” is taken in their preparation. Do it on the computer and do it quickly! Oh! that is showing my age!

Here are two Mother of Pearl sew through buttons. They each have four holes and carved decoration. I am sure it was a fiddly job doing the carving and guess people got good at it after practice. As the saying goes ” Practice makes perfect ” and these look very well done. The different types of shell of course have different colours although they may be quite subtle.

These three buttons are metalized plastic of which I have hundreds of different ones. These ones are a little older than many I have. Some people think they are metal buttons but they are imitation. This type of button is still available in the shops today.

Here are some more Button Covers of which I do not have full sets. To me they are rather clumsy and not at all pretty. The green one looks like a lollie. I wonder how many people actually used them or if they were just a passing fad. What do you think?

Here are two more sets of Button Covers but on their original cards. As you can see I paid $4 for each card at the Opp Shop. I have asked them not to write on the front with texter colour but they forget. I see the original price was $16.95 . One lot are pearl like centres and the other coloured glass like. I think they may come from around the 1980s.

Here is a set of Cameo button covers made from plastic. How real do they look! You can see by the backs how they open up and slide behind the existing button and just snap shut. How clever is that and you have rejuvenated a garment.
